How to Wear This Formal Day Tie

Formal day attire varies based on the occasion and the expected level of formality, especially for social events like weddings. The least formal outfit will consist of a dark three-piece suit, usually in charcoal gray, worn with a white shirt and wedding tie.

A conventional middle ground consists of a black jacket with peaked lapels, worn with striped formal trousers and a waistcoat in mid-gray or buff. The most formal attire, still worn in Great Britain and Japan for formal day weddings, consists of a morning tailcoat with a tophat, a formal day waistcoat, formal trousers, and a wedding tie. With all of these outfits, well-polished black plain-toe shoes are worn.

Because the overall formality of the occasion calls for a sedate appearance, creative but still conservative necktie knots are a critical opportunity for the introduction of visual interest into your ensemble. Because of their excessively thick interlining, most contemporary formal ties can only be worn with thick, bulky tie knots. Historically, however, classic gentlemen of style favored neater, smaller, more elegant knots.

Therefore, Fort Belvedere formal neckties were specially designed to accommodate as wide a variety of tie knot styles as possible. From a four-in-hand to a balthus or double windsor, Fort Belvedere ties appear dashing and debonair with knots of any size. Be aware that for larger knots, it may behoove you to size up to a longer tie to ensure that you have access to sufficient fabric.

Silk has been the traditional material for formal day neckties for centuries, but few makers produce fabric of sufficient quality. While we faced challenges in finding the perfect materials, our search ended successfully at a traditional mill in Italy. This mill produces exquisite fabrics on time-honored looms that embody the elegance and stature associated with formal daywear, including neckties.

This tie is meticulously crafted to guarantee a flawless structure and exquisite knots. It boasts a 3-fold design complemented by an Italian wool interlining. The use of robust 3-ply silk thread secures the tie, promising both durability and a long lifespan.

To fulfill our stringent quality criteria, each of these neckties is meticulously hand-stitched. This method provides complete control to ensure the superior build that is anticipated of high-end day neckwear, while also introducing subtle variations in craftsmanship that enhance the tie’s drape and flexibility.

Sized To Fit You

Almost all retailers sell their ties as one-size-fits-all. A handful offer neckties that are either longer or shorter. At Fort Belvedere, we cater to the needs of every man, whether of modest, average, or above-average height, which is why we are proud to offer neckties in three distinct sizes.

The dimensions of our neckties are proportional to your height.

SHORT: For those who are 5’8” or 173 cm or shorter.

REGULAR: For those between 5’9″ or 175 cm and 6’2″ or 188 cm.

LONG: For those who are 6’3” or 190 cm or taller.

If you prefer to wear trousers with a higher rise and are in-between sizes, it may be better to size down so that the necktie does not fall below your waistband when tied.

Available Self-Tipped or Untipped

Based on size, some of our ties are Self-Tipped or Untipped.

Self-tipped ties have a lining as part of their tips. The overwhelming majority of tie makers use a less expensive fabric for the tip in a bid to save money, but doing so compromises on the look and the functionality of the tie. All self-tipped Fort Belvedere ties feature a generous piece of lining in the same fabric as the tie’s body for a consistent, quality-made look and feel that is in keeping with traditional self-tipped tie construction.

Fort Belvedere also offers untipped ties in which the tips are carefully hand-rolled for a beautiful look and secure finish that requires more skill to achieve than a self-tipped tie. Because they have less fabric, untipped ties are also lighter. Untipped ties were very popular in the 1930s, and as a tribute to the styling conventions of that era, Fort Belvedere untipped ties have a vintage flared end.

Please Note: Because this tie is handmade and is designed to be flexible, its final size can vary. As a general rule, our ties have a length tolerance of 1.5″ – 4 cm.

Care

Cleaning

Do not wash this necktie.

If stained, spot clean the area with tepid water and diluted detergent suitable for silk, such as a delicate wash.

Pat dry with a clean cloth and allow to air dry flat.

Pressing

Ideally, use a steamer on its lowest setting to relax any wrinkles from this tie. It can also be ironed on the lowest heat setting; place a cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric for best results.

Storage

To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neckwear tied or knotted.

Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.

Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.

Store your tie flat, in a loose roll, or hanging.
