This stately leather is also available as a conventional single-sided belt.
The Look & Scent of Reindeer Leather
Partake of a legacy of luxury with the brown side of this dress belt, made from leather meticulously crafted from iconic and historic “reindeer” leather made in Britain’s last traditional oak bark tannery. This leather embodies four centuries of artisanal heritage, featuring the signature diamond-hatched grain and a sumptuous finish imparted by natural birch oils.
Also known as “Cuir de Russie,” it is prized for its iconic appearance and unique qualities. Renowned for its water resistance, distinctive woody aroma, and exceptional durability, as this leather ages, its appearance will deepens with a rich patina and subtle bloom, the ideal accessory for those who demand history, rarity, and refinement in every detail.
Leather with a Legacy
This “reindeer” leather is a modern recreation of an 18th-century material recovered from the wreck of the Metta Catharina, a ship that sank off the coast of Devon, England, in 1786 while carrying a precious cargo of Russian leather from Saint Petersburg to Genoa.
Nearly 200 years after it sank, divers discovered the ship in 1973, finding hundreds of rolls of Russian leather astonishingly well preserved beneath the mud of the sea floor, their unique characteristics and distinct birch oil scent still intact. The discovery provided a rare window into the lost craft of Russian leather tanning; a method renowned for durability, aroma, and water-resistance but thought to have vanished after the Russian Revolution.
Studying these recovered hides, our tanners meticulously analyzed and replicated the Russian techniques, successfully reviving the legendary leather for contemporary use, made, this time, from decadent calf leather rather than reindeer hide.

The Boxcalf Leather: Plush and Decadent
The hides for the black boxcalf side of the belt come exclusively from calves. Calf skin is superior to cowhide in every way when it comes to belt leather:
- Exceptionally soft touch
- Dazzling grain appearance
- Durable flexibility.
Bred To Be The Best
Because these calves were raised in the colder climate of the Alps, there are fewer pests to bite their hides, meaning that the final hide has fewer blemishes.
From these hides, only the choicest sections of the croupon, or bend, of the hide are actually used. The croupon corresponds roughly to the central and lower back of the calf, excluding the spine area, because this section of skin affords the smoothest, softest, and most consistent leathers.
A Luxury Tannery
The hide is then prepared in the same tannery employed by several high-end fashion houses, but that’s not why we picked the tannery. We picked it for its heritage of excellence, dedication to craft, and impeccable results, which truly speak for themselves.
The “Reindeer” Leather: Distinct and Fragrant
Although referred to as “reindeer” leather, this nomenclature is a bit of a misnomer. This leather is a reproduction of an ancient method of Russian leather production, which historically employed reindeer hides but also calf skins and occasionally horse, sheep, or goat hides.
Reviving an Ancient Tradition
Our version is made from only the finest calf skins. After soaking in a lime pit, each hide is denuded of hairs by hand and then soaked in pits of oak, willow, and birch bark. We have found that this process most closely replicates the ancient Russian techniques.
Each piece is than dyed, cross hatched, and dressed with a combination of natural oils, including birch oil, which imparts an iconic, slightly smokey masculine fragrance that has been associated with refinement and exclusivity for centuries.
Historic Oak Bark Tannage
This leather was tanned in Britain’s only remaining oak bark tannery, operated by the same family for six generations. Oak bark tannage takes time, but it is also a gentler process that naturally protects and emphasizes the fibers that give this leather such a remarkable appearance.
Dedicated fans will remember that Raphael commissioned a pair of shoes made from this exquisite and striking leather.
Please Note: Over time, this leather will develop small, whitish spots. These spots are created by the waxes in the leather coagulating on the surface. This is not a defect and is simply a natural process that comes with how this leather is made. Simply wipe the spots with a soft, clean cloth to remove them.

- Each belt is about 29 mm / 1.14″ wide.
- Each belt weighs between 90 and 120 grams / 3 to 4.2 ounces.
- Each belt features five diamond-shaped holes for the prong.
- These holes are spaced about 2.5 cm / 1″ apart
- Please note that if you pin the belt through its last hole, it can accommodate waists of an additional 5cm / 2″, although we do not recommend wearing the belt in this way as it can appear distended or stubby.
Cutting Your Belt to Size
- Our belts are designed to be cut down to size from their unfinished edge so that they fit you perfectly. We offer individual sizing to reduce waste where possible.
- Try the uncut belt on for size to determine exactly where you want to cut it.
- Cut the belt down to size using sharp scissors or a sharp knife.
- If you are not sure about your size, you can always buy the longest belt and cut more of it down.
Russian Reindeer Leather
This leather has been oak bark-tanned for strength and durability. When it requires cleaning, or to restore its appearance, we recommend:
- Wipe the leather with a damp cloth, applying saddle soap and buffing with a cloth or soft brush.
- Allow to air dry naturally.
Please do not use oil based leather feeds as these displace the greases in the leather and cause the fibers to dry out and degrade.
Please Note: When you receive your leather, it will likely have a white-ish residue on the grain side. This residue, called dubbin, can be removed with a soft bristled brush such as used to shine shoes.
This residue is not a defect and does not negatively affect the quality of the leather in any way. It is a natural result of how the leather has been made, and can be easily and safely wiped away.
