The Timeless Silk Satin Cummerbund
Evolving from a sash worn around the waist, a cummerbund is a unique accessory that refines your midsection while imparting an unexpected variation to your waist that breaks up the bulk of a dinner jacket and formal trousers. This produces an elegant effect that imparts dignity and sophistication to any gentleman.
This cummerbund has been carefully crafted from radiant silk satin, the most common weave for cummerbunds in contemporary styling. To respect the dignity and beauty of Black Tie, we insist upon only the very finest silk. Sourced from a renowned Italian silk mill, this silk satin is made from warp satin, which imparts a superior sheen and ethereal luster when compared with the cheaper, and inferior, weft satin utilized by most modern manufacturers. It is, with no exaggeration, the most expensive satin in the world.
This cummerbund is also smaller than our other cummerbunds and was designed to be worn by slimmer gentlemen. We recommend considering this cummerbund if your waist size is 33 inches – 84 cm or smaller and you prefer the trimmest possible fit for your cummerbund.
During the Golden Age of Menswear, stylish gentlemen went to the effort of matching the fabrics of their Black Tie ensembles, ensuring that their bow ties, faced lapels, cummerbunds, and shoelaces were properly coordinated. To help you achieve this level of style perfection, Fort Belvedere is happy to carry coordinating bow ties, designed to harmonize with each and every one of our cummerbunds.
While you may choose how to keep your waist covered, a waist covering of some kind is essential, and a cummerbund is, for most gentlemen, an excellent option because it flatters the figure by cinching the waist and, because of its reduced size, is more breathable and cooler than a formal evening waistcoat.

How to Wear This Cummerbund
In keeping with the formality of Black Tie, the waistband of your trousers and its various utilitarian features, such as suspender buttons or side adjusters, should be hidden from view. One can achieve this by wearing a fully-buttoned double-breasted dinner jacket or a formal evening waistcoat, but the most popular option today is to wear a cummerbund.
Outside of the traditions of certain clubs and military organizations, the cummerbund is always worn with the pleats facing upwards. You may find this easier to remember with the silly pneumonic that your cummerbund should be oriented like a “crumb catcher.”
This cummerbund features an elastic loop that should be secured to the button of your trousers. Doing so will securely hold the cummerbund in its proper position and ensure that it does not ride up as you move.
To be in keeping with Classic style conventions, your bow tie should be made from the same fabric as your cummerbund. You should also wear a boutonniere, with a rose or carnation being the most traditional for an evening ensemble. All of these accessories, and more, are available from Fort Belvedere.
One Size Fits All
Thanks to our elastic inserts and button expander, all of our cummerbunds are essentially “one size fits all” and should accommodate most gentlemen without issue. In particular, the generously-sized silk panel, measuring 62 cm x 15 cm or 24.5” x 6,” will fully cover most stomachs, as is appropriate.
Currently we do carry one cummerbund, with a silk satin finish, designed to accommodate slimmer gentlemen. We recommend this option for the trimmest fit possible if you wear a Trouser Size 33 (US) or smaller.
That being said, our regular sizes will be able to accommodate even very slim gentleman under most circumstances.
The Finest Silk for Evening Wear
All of the silk used to make our Fort Belvedere cummerbunds was sourced from a heritage Italian silk mill that has been producing exceptional silk for decades. The quality of this silk imparts the unique sheen and ethereal luster that is the hallmark of superlative quality.
This mill is also able to create silk weaves that, while once commonplace among the well-dressed, are almost forgotten today. As a result, Fort Belvedere is one of only a handful of providers able to source silk cummerbunds not only in the traditional satin weave but also in wide ribbed grosgrain, fine faille grosgrain, silk barathea, and silk moire.
To stand out as a true connoisseur of style, you have to rely on only the finest, and rarest, weaves of exceptional-quality silk; that is exactly what we are proud to provide at Fort Belvedere.
Care
If your cummerbund becomes stained, it can be spot cleaned with a detergent suitable for delicate silks.
If the stain persists, take your cummerbund to a reputable dry cleaner.
Storage
When not being worn, store your cummerbund flat with the belt extended or folded behind the silk panel.
If possible, avoid folding or compressing the silk panel to reduce wrinkling.
To preserve the unique luster of your cummerbund, do not store it in direct sunlight.
